Westpoint: Rich in History, Tradition and Family.
You may be very surprised to learn that the general population of Curaçao refer to the Westernmost part of the island as Westpoint, and the Easternmost part of the island as Eastpoint. Both are rich in history and are steeped in traditions that go back many generations.

Westpoint is a very important marker in the history Curaçao. For a start, the slave revolt led by the famous liberator, Tula, started at the Knip Plantation in 1795. Back in the day, Curaçao's population was divided between white people, people of mixed race, free people of color and slaves. Even though the uprising left a mark, slavery was not completely abolished until 1863. Unlike other regions of the island, Westpoint was considered a free region. It didn't house Plantations or Slave Masters. This is why freed slaves would happily settle in the Westernmost part of the island.

As the community grew into steadily three hundred individuals, Monsignor Nieuwindt, requested permission to build a church in Westpoint. In 1849, he was granted some land and the community put their hands together to build the very first church. A rectory and a little school followed in years to come.
